A bas relief plaque is the most sculptural way to honor a person. Send us your photo and an artist will hand sculpt a clay model, which is then cast into bronze or aluminum. Our bas relief castings are 6” to 12” with a finished depth of 3/4” to 1”, and the finished casting is attached to a standard bronze or aluminum base plaque. Because every piece starts with a hand-sculpted model, production times range from 6 to 8 weeks — work with your project manager to determine the right bas relief size, and they will make recommendations for the base plaque.

Bronze bas relief plaques: understanding the production process

Over the past year, many of our clients have used artificial intelligence to create design concepts for custom bronze plaques. These programs can produce impressive images, but we have noticed that AI frequently defaults to depicting portraits and other artwork in a sculpted bas relief style.

While these concepts may look amazing on screen, it is important to understand how a genuine bronze bas relief plaque is produced — and how the process affects its cost and production time.

What is a bas relief plaque?

Bas relief is a sculptural technique in which figures and design elements project outward from a flat background. Unlike an engraved image, a bas relief portrait has actual depth, contours, and modeled details.

Creating an authentic bas relief plaque requires much more than converting an AI-generated design into a production file. The artwork must first be interpreted and sculpted by a skilled artist.

How a bronze bas relief plaque is made

The process typically begins with photographs of the person or subject. A professional sculptor studies these reference images and creates a clay model of the portrait or design by hand.

Once the initial clay sculpture is complete, the artist provides photographs of the bas relief model for review. The client can then request adjustments. Because these changes must be made directly to the clay sculpture, the review process may involve several rounds of careful, hands-on work.

After the client approves the final clay model, it is used to create the molds and patterns needed to cast the design in bronze. The finished relief is then incorporated into the plaque and completed with the selected background, lettering, border, finish, and mounting method.

This specialized process requires artistic skill, significant labor, and additional production steps. As a result, genuine bronze bas relief plaques are typically more expensive and require longer lead times than conventional plaque designs.

AI concepts versus production-ready designs

AI is an excellent tool for exploring ideas, styles, and possible layouts. However, an AI-generated image is a visual concept — not necessarily a production-ready design.

AI may depict extremely fine details, dramatic depth, or sculptural effects that cannot be reproduced directly through standard casting or engraving. If an AI concept includes bas relief artwork, creating the finished plaque may require a sculptor to reinterpret that artwork as a physical clay model.

Clients should therefore avoid assuming that everything shown in an AI-generated concept can be manufactured at the price of a standard bronze plaque.

Engraved bronze plaques: a cost-effective alternative

For many projects, an engraved bronze plaque offers a more economical alternative. Portraits, photographs, logos, and other artwork can often be reproduced through engraving without requiring a hand-sculpted clay model.

Although engraving does not create the same dimensional, sculptural appearance as true bas relief, it can provide an attractive, detailed, and durable result. It is often the better choice when budget or turnaround time is a primary consideration.

Whichever method you choose, the finished relief or engraving is completed with your choice of base plaque color, texture, border, and lettering.

Choosing the right production method
